2 teams from Warrior Martial Arts travelled to Cardiff, Wales to take part in the annual Sword of Friendship Tournament. The winning team in this event receive a real sword, a replica of an ancient Welsh weapon and must host the following year’s tournament. This is a very prestigious event and is by invitation only. With only 2 organisations from Ireland asked to attend, it was a great honour for the Warriors to be invited.

The competition is a team event where the combined score of the whole team in sparring, destruction (board breaking) and team patterns is added together. Warrior had a Senior team of 4 men and 2 women and a Junior Girls team of 5 girls.

The Senior team were unlucky to come up against a very strong English team in the first round and, although they put in a great effort, did not progress to the next round. This English team were the eventual winners of the Senior sword.

The Junior Girls fared better and drew with a Welsh team to progress to the Semi-finals. Again, they just missed out by 1 point in a playoff to finish fourth overall. Although the Sword did not make it back to Ireland this time out, the girls put in a great performance with 4 of the 5 competing in their first ever international.

Senior Team: Dwayne Crowley, Mark Moriyama, Erik Hilmer, Alan Kremer, Claire Mc Carthy and Sarah Murphy

Junior Girls Team: Elyssa Curran, Anya Curran, Nicole O’Regan, Sinead Hurley and Kate Murphy
