The Rules of the Dojang (Training Area).
It should be understood that these rules are intended to ensure the safest and most benificial practice and study of Tae Kwon Do for both you and your fellow students.
- Bow upon entering
- Bow to the Instructor at a proper distance
- Exchange greetings between students
- Bow to Instructor upon forming a line prior to training
- Bow to the Instructor upon forming a line prior to dismissal
- Bow before leaving the Dojang.
- No smoking, eating, drinking or wearing of jewellery, rings, etc. in the dojang (training area) is permitted.
- After the first grading a dobok must be worn during training in the dojang, wearing tracksuits or outside clothes is not permitted, unless prior permission has been obtained from the Instructor.
- To leave the floor during a class, first raise your hand and seek permission from the instructor. DO NOT walk off the floor until the instructor has granted permission – this is disrespectful and dangerous for both you and your class-mates.
- To enter or return to the class, while the class is in progress, stand at the side of your line or at the back of the class with your hands behind your back. You may only enter the class once the instructor has granted you permission and has bowed to you. Once permission has been granted, you must bow to your instructor before entering the class.
- Students should always be on time for class and should be ready to commence training immediately at the designated time. Students who are regularly late for class may face disciplinary action.
- If a student, for reasons beyond their control, is late for a class, they will stand at the back or side of the dojang, ensuring that they do not interfere with the class in progress in any way. The student will wait in this area with their hands behind their back until they receive further instruction from the instructor.
- When working with partners, ALWAYS bow to each other before commencing activities. When partner activities have finished or if you must leave your partner; ALWAYS bow, shake hands, and thank your partner.
- Having engaged in training activities or conversation with an instructor or a fellow student, DO NOT turn your back on the other person without having first thanked them, bowed, and taken one step back. It is disrespectful to turn your back on an instructor or student.
- When handing equipment to an instructor or student, always bow and hand the equipment to them carefully. DO NOT throw training equipment – this is dangerous and disrespectful.
- When receiving equipment from an instructor or students, always bow and thank the other person.
- If an assistant instructor or a visiting instructor is present during the class, he/she is to be afforded the same respect as your regular instructor.
- During class or Tae Kwon Do events (competitions, gradings, seminars, etc) instructors are to be addressed by their formal titles (for example Sir, Miss/Ma’am, Mister Jones, Miss Smith)
